  • The Waste Reduction Task Force, comprised of City Staff and informed residents invested two years into reviewing garbage and recycling options. They recommended following the lead of many nearby municipalities by adopting weekly recycling collection and bi-weekly garbage collection. City Council disregarded the recommendation and signed a 7 year contract for weekly garbage and recycling services. Illegal dumping was cited as one of the key factors leading to council’s decision. Based on the budget numbers that were presented at the time, we estimate this decision will cost taxpayers over 10 million dollars over the life of the contract. A year after the contract was signed, waste diversion has gone down, the lifespan of our landfill site is reduced and the local newspaper printed an article related to idle waste collection staff. Why did we adopt a one-size fits all waste collection system? If for example, Ancaster residents were prepared to transition to bi-weekly garbage collection, why were they not permitted to do so and why are they paying for excessive collection services that they do not use? Which councillors were involved with the Waste Reduction Task Force?
